We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join our team and help navigate the complex legal landscape of environmental markets. Reporting to the General Counsel, this is a busy and diverse role within a team that provides the full range of in-house legal services across a purpose-driven and rapidly expanding business.
You will focus on project-related commercial and transactional matters including a growing portfolio of international and voluntary carbon market projects. You will apply your experience in property and commercial law to drafting a wide variety of legal documents and handling and resolving a wide variety of legal issues. The role requires an ability to be flexible and available to work across all streams of legal work at varying levels of complexity subject to client demands, expertise and priorities. The role provides a balance of autonomy and teamwork and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in achieving positive climate, biodiversity and water quality outcomes.
This unique role will provide opportunities to navigate uncharted legal territory in emerging environmental markets and climate law. You will work on innovative transaction structures and be helping to shape the future of how the law will exist in this space.
More about the role:
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts and agreements with a wide range of counterparties.
- Managing transactions from end to end including a growing portfolio of projects in emerging biodiversity and carbon markets, both in Australia and internationally.
- Advising in relation to a variety of property related matters across all tenure types including various aspects of natural resource management, native title and cultural heritage and competing land uses.
- Advising in relation to regulatory, corporate and commercial transactional matters.
- Providing legal support to transactional negotiations across the business.
- Managing external legal providers.
About you:
- Solicitor admitted to practice in an Australian jurisdiction with a minimum 8 years post qualification experience in either private practice or in-house, or both.
- Extensive experience in property, commercial transactions and projects.
- Some experience in native title and cultural heritage matters is desirable.
- Experience working in carbon and biodiversity markets is also desirable but not essential.
- Proven ability to manage complex legal issues and provide practical and commercial solutions in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment whilst managing the competing priorities of project stakeholders.
- Ability to articulate and communicate complex legal issues to non-lawyers.
- Excellent practice management skills, including time management and the ability to provide regular and proactive updates of legal activities to your line manager and Executives as needed.
- Building productive working relationships across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and to contribute effectively in a team environment in order to provide quality and timely client service.
