Glenogie Native Forest Protection Project

Avoided Deforestation

With the effects of a changing climate being felt all over Australia, there are many plant and animal species that need more than a helping hand to see the next century through.

For Bernard and Christopher Knight, their 8,750ha working cattle farm on the Narran River seemed like just the right place to do that. Glenogie and its surrounding landscapes have previously been cleared on a broad scale for pasture, but the sandy ridge country is also home to a variety of species with high potential for conservation significance in the region.

In 2015, the Knights began working with GreenCollar to protect and manage the native forest – including grasslands, shrublands and woodlands dominated by Acacia, Eremophila, Callitris and Eucalypt species. Now, 1,985ha of native forest is being maintained, alongside their grazing enterprise, providing a healthier habitat that will help Australia’s iconic pasture thrive into the future.

By ceasing broadscale clearing for pasture, mitigating fire risk, and upgrading fencing on the property the Knights have also protected their soil from degradation through managed grazing, and improved the water quality flowing into the Narran Lake Nature Reserve Ramsar Site – all while continuing to run a productive grazing enterprise.
