First project to apply for carbon credits from the Government to not clear native vegetation in Queensland
As debate rages in Queensland about land clearing, one farmer in the Maranoa district west of Roma plans to get carbon credits for avoiding it. The next Federal Government Emission Reduction Fund auction for carbon abatement projects is being finalised for April 27-28.
In the last auction in November, Queensland graziers were big winners earning income with savannah burning projects, with 21 graziers in the Cape York region securing $36 million, planning to prevent the hottest savannah fires.
But none so far have been paid for the Carbon Farming Initiative for “avoided deforestation”.
Sydney-based company Green Collar has worked with a Maranoa landholder to protect over 5000 hectares of forest at threat of being cleared, providing an ecosystem connection between the Chesterton Range and the Maranoa River.
